In the not-so-distant future, Theo Praxis lives in a society in which everyone's memory is erased every twenty-four hours apart from his own. In this turbocharged society, technology fully bridges the gap between desire and fulfillment as everyone's mind is restricted to the present. The speed-enhancing technology causes people to live in a perpetual present, and as a result they lose their memory after one day. The ruler of his city is the Blind Watchmaker, a man who is determined to maintain control over people's ability to remember. Theo Praxis falls in love with a mysterious woman who holds the key to understanding who he is. He also realizes that his actions influence every one else's actions, but he is unable to control his influence on the course of events. He discovers that he must defeat the Blind Watchmaker, who believes that "only the fast will last." A world of action is enacted in his memory, which helps him to take control of his own destiny. This novel is concerned with the conflict between intelligent design and evolution.
