'Two Finger' Alberto Philiono was hiding out from prohibition agent Eliot Ness. If a person were to turn him in or agree to testify against him, he would kill that person and anyone else who got in his way. Hanna Dupree has to find a way to get this man and the rest of his Chicago gangsters off of her property and away from her valley. Suffering from a heart condition that was easily triggered by stress, she has to move cautiously, relying on the doodeewaun, her small forest friends, to stayed a step ahead of the mobster as she discreetly puts into motion a plan to free her friends and family from Philiono's evil tyranny. The doodeewaun are risking everything to come out of hiding to help Hanna. For centuries these little creatures have been able to avoid being discovered by humans. But now, their dearly beloved friend is in great danger. Believers in the Creator, the doodeewaun know the power of prayer and the importance of obeying God. Faced with an evil they also know the presence of darkness. Fearful little creatures, all they can do is watch and listen and then use their incredible ability to repeat word for word everything they have heard. Thus allowing Hanna to be aware of Philiono's activities without leaving her kitchen at home. In a time of telephone party lines, Hanna doesn't dare use her phone to rally her neighbors into action. She must rely on her dependable little friends to relay messages.
