Unexpectedly faced with taking over the family business, Cathy West is finding it difficult to adjust to the change. Having to give up her teaching career is bad enough. Worse, she is an agnostic, opposed to organized religion, and the family business centers around a mega-church. It is an impossible situation, but turning down what may be her ailing father's last request seems equally impossible. Cathy needs some time alone to ponder her decision. She arranges for a helicopter to take her and her camping gear to a remote ghost town east of the Sierras. Rumors say a strange entity inhabits the place, causing anger and dissention in susceptible individuals, but Cathy is too levelheaded to believe such nonsense. Cathy's alone time is spoiled when her mobility impaired brother Peter invites himself along. An accident to the helicopter adds the pilot, Lucas Palmer, and his brother Rich to the mix. Cathy has a history with the Palmer brothers, and it hasn't always been an easy one. The appearance of aspiring politician Albert Bensch and his minions further complicates the situation. They are there to protest the construction project that Cathy's father has planned for the site - or so they say. But what is their real purpose and how will it affect Cathy and her companions?
