Eleven-year-old Summer Wilkens was excited to finally move into a real house, not an ordinary house, a mansion called Ebony Wood. Summer was tired of hotel rooms and tutors, the only life she knew because she had always traveled with her parents when they were on assignments. The boxes were still unpacked when Summer's parents were asked to take one final assignment. However, this time Summer refused to travel with them. She didn't want to leave Ebony Wood. Before they could leave, Summer's parents had to find someone to move into Ebony Wood with Summer, not an easy task because of rumors in the local village that Ebony Wood was haunted. Then one day an old woman, with mysteries of her own, appeared and agreed to stay in Ebony Wood. The only other persons to venture to Ebony Wood were the boy who tended the garden and the tutor who seemed more interested in spreading rumors of a ghost than teaching Summer. The mysterious sights and sounds in the old mansion soon had Summer wondering if staying at Ebony Wood had been the right decision.
