David enters the scene as a young man and we find him undertaking the job of a shepherd. David, the youngest of eight sons was given the least esteemed duties of the family; he was responsible to shepherd the family flock. As the providence of God would have it, David was unknowingly training for reigning. The people of Israel moving ahead of the timetable of God had already chosen their king named Saul, but David was the chosen one of God. David showed that he was well able to pass the test of responsibility over the possessions of another. He also exhibited enormous strength of character as he passed the remarkable test of protecting the family's innocent sheep from both a lion and a bear. David was fearless in service and loyal in his duties. Here is the first indication of the integrity of the heart of David. David did what he did without a public show. The greatest characteristic of integrity is what is done from a sense of God especially when no one is around to watch. Reputation is who people see us to be but integrity is whom we prove ourselves to be when no one is looking.
