Kathy Murphy is in a hurry to leave Springfield, Illinois and get on the road to Seattle, Washington. She considers herself lucky when she meets Vincenzo (Vinny) Ventimillion and he agrees to help her load the cargo trailer she has hitched to her car with furniture and other heavy items from her apartment for only fifty bucks. When Vinny reveals he is homeless and shares that he'd love a road trip so he can have some time to think, Kathy agrees to let him ride with her and her cat named Preacher for a while with the idea of getting him a bus ticket along the way to return to Springfield.
