Simon Sayers died twenty years ago on a planet populated by man-sized, intelligent reptiles he named "Elpies." The "Bluemen," intergalactic explorers who had inadvertently caused his murder, brought him back from the dead and returned him to earth to start his life over. Despite what he'd suffered, Simon would always cherish his time on the Elpies' planet, for it brought him Bess, his soul mate, the Elpies, who became his family, and Gisella, the abused child whom he and Bess came to love. Now the Bluemen have returned with an invitation for the Sayers, their Blueman enhanced animals, and their Elpie friends. The Bluemen's world is celebrating The Rebirth of their society, a monumental occurrence that all of them helped to bring about, and the planet's ruling body has requested that these "Bringers" join their celebration as honored guests. The grand adventure on the Bluemen's planet soon turns tragic, however, when one Blueman, driven mad by The Rebirth, begins to target those he feels responsible for its onset. Murders, poison and sabotage stalk the planet's ruling body, the ship's crew, and the visitors themselves. When the ensuing investigation is stalled by an inept and spiteful bureaucrat, Simon and Elsie, the enhanced Search and Rescue mutt, put his savvy and her nose to work to try and find the killer. In a brutal abduction, Bess and Jonas, the Sayers' teenage son, finally fall prey to the maniac. When Elsie tracks the two into the isolated jungle of a preserve full of alien predators, the Sayers and their friends face the enemy in a bloody confrontation that will require the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of love.
