Allen Brockman is an independent scholar and photographer living in rural Virginia. This 4-volume set is a compilation of black and white photographs of historical, natural, and modern sites, people and things in one of Virginia's most interesting counties-Middlesex-on the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay-with particular focus on the central part of the county (near where the author lives) and elsewhere. The area is not on one of Virginia's interstates, which is all the more reason to take a leisurely drive up or down U. S. 17 and take a visit. You may never want to leave! This volume (3) is a compilation of more than 100 black and white photographs of people (here and there) and general places, I find interesting; of the County's postal service; of everything Chesty Puller and regarding the military in Middlesex; of causes lost or nearly lost (the Dominion transmission line controversy); and of roads and lanes I find interesting. Volume 1 focuses on the historical and aquatic recreational aspects of the County and elsewhere. This includes beach, natural area, nature, agricultural, watermen, rivers, bay, and recreation-all are pictured in volume 1. Volumes 2 and 4 contain other photos about animals, interesting houses (a tour through downtown Saluda), churches to attend services, and what to see, do, eat, and buy in Middlesex. Previously, the author wrote a 2-volume biography of President James Monroe (Old Portrait New Frame).
