The Lucia Papers recount Lucia's love affair with Mr. Wonderful. It is a cross-generational cautionary tale told with humor and pathos to her granddaughter, a young woman who looks to Lucia for guidance as she comes into her own in Manhattan much like Lucia did in the mid 1960s. Lucia's involvement with Mr. Wonderful spanned decades. Theirs has been an off again, on again relationship. When it becomes apparent that they are about to embark on yet another time of togetherness, Lucia vows to provide a little competition and unleashes the Imaginary Man. The Imaginary Man has no physical likeness, but Lucia's description - culled from her imagination and the composite she forms from the many men she has met over the course of thirty years - helps create a man who is not only younger, taller, and more financially successful than Mr. Wonderful, he is perfect in every way. The Lucia Papers tell the adventurous tale of a woman of a certain age, the man she loved, and the imaginary man she created to keep him on his toes.
