The GA 10th Infantry Battalion was formed in Americus, Georgia during the spring of 1862. They were assigned to the Military District of Georgia, commanded by Brigadier General Hugh W. Mercer. Their first duties were Georgia coastal defense. They remained at Camp Stephens until 14 May 1862 when they received orders to proceed to Macon, Georgia to guard several thousand federal prisoners at Camp Oglethorpe located near Macon. The 10th Battalion received orders on 15 December 1862 to proceed to Virginia to join Robert E. Lee's army at Fredericksburg. The battalion arrived on 27 December 1862 and was attached to General G. T. Anderson's Brigade, General Hoods Division, of General Longstreet's Corps. They continued throughout the remainder of the war in Virginia.
