1963 -. Mr. T. J. Boldman is one of the richest cane men in Bensenville County. He owns and operates Glory Vine Plantation, an inheritance that has been in his family for more than a hundred years. But in spite of all his riches, he is plagued with a dark family secret that he'll never own up to; still, he self-consciously provides for Donovan Edinburg I, a dedicated cane cutter who has worked for his family for many years, never once having questioned his rights to the Boldman's wealth. Donovan and his wife, Josie, guards this secret from their son, Donovan Edinburg II, whose suspicions grew stronger when he considered his demeanor, poise, and features to that of the other cane workers'. Before going off to college, Donovan II gets involved with Johnny Effortson, a bitter cane cutter whose realm was placed under an evil curse before he was born. The curse, having left him heartless, and as a result, he seeks to destroy the lives of others for his misfortunes. He eventually introduces Donovan II to the world of necromancy that quickly decoy him from his family values. When Donovan II returns home a successful businessman, he marries Marilyn Spendmoore and becomes the first black man to ever own a multimillion-dollar sugarcane industry; but not without having first endured a string of hate crimes. The sordid secrets that his parents kept concealed are ultimately unveiled, and just as his parents, he decides to keep them hidden from his son Donovan Edinburg III, who upon his father's urging, also experiments with necromancy. He becomes enthralled with Zale McDowell, an unaware high school sweetheart that he becomes uxoriously in love with to the point of stalking her, frequently teetering delusional thoughts of her becoming his wife. This eventually leads to the murder of Elliott Steins, a local professor that Zale began seeing. As the saga continues more family lies and secrets are unveiled, and the lives of innocent people are caught up in a whirlwind of necromancy, adultery, lust, murder, and betrayal. Will the two families loyalty to secrecy survive the hidden tragedies ahead? Will Johnny Effortson ever find restitution? In a world where money and power is all that matters . . .
