Aleksandr Pyetrovic was at University in St. Petersburg when called home due to a family tragedy. Unable to return to University he is forced to flee Russia ahead of conscription in the Tsar's army at the urging of his father. His facility for languages suggests the United States of America as a destination and he sails in steerage to get there only to be turned back to Liverpool. After changing his name, he finds employment in London hoping to earn enough money to sail in first class to America where he hopes to be out of reach of the Russian authorities. America welcomes him after his second voyage and he sets out to make a better life... This immigrant's tale was inspired by stories handed down from generation to generation within the Author's family.
