Essays of an Ordinary Man - Volume 3
William J Waters
For me the most difficult material about which to write is a passage of scripture. I think that is because unlike a personal experience or a fictitious plot, a passage of scripture is incapable of comment in isolation; it has to be and may only be understood when viewed in its context. That is to say the passage or verse we select for review must be compared with other similar verses. Then finally, our interpretation must also agree with the overall thrust of scripture "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit", 2 Peter 1:20, 21.
