River is won by Mellie, a woman more human than monster who struggles with the burden of having a human life on her hands. She doesn't want to kill him, she doesn't want him at all. Now River must find a way to survive in a town where humans are food, slaves and playthings, where his flesh is coveted, his owner isn't strong enough to protect him, and some of the monsters are beginning to tempt him...
