"My brother has glass for eyes."
Puzzle is a journey into the integrating South, through the burgeoning town of Pleasant, which lies at the crossroads of several states and railroads and at the foot of several Native American power mountains. The confluence of magic, madness, and miscegenation creates a special, innocent child. A child born from a dead mother, the living see him in their dreams before they die and the dead are reflected on the glass shards embedded seamlessly to his face.
He is a flesh-pact created by the two warring families, Black, Old Family and White, First Family. He is the willful weapon of one and the manipulated sin of the other. Scarred by a horrific accident, the boy becomes the crux and living manifestation of dark, twisted secrets and a dangerous love-war between mother and daughters, father and sons, that have clawed through multiple generations. Kin, town residents, local politicians, medicine men and wealthy leaders alike, conspire, in the past and the present, to use the boy to gain the upper hand, the final hand, to control the town and its' riches.
And then, to control or kill the heir apparent.
"A man wants love; a woman knows love is a weapon."
