Publisher Marketing: I was just finishing hanging my sign over the doorway to my office. It looked so good to me, and I was ready to start seeing patients, but so far none had come in. Contemplating my next move, all of a sudden my first patient knocked on my door. I opened the door and invited him in. He was a farmer and he said, "Doc, I need you to follow me quick to my place." When we stopped our horses, I got off my horse and started toward the house. The farmer said the problem is in the barn, as he opened the barn door. I wasn't quite sure what he was talking about, but when I walked in, I could see the problem. A cow was in a stall with a dirt floor that hadn't been cleaned in many days. It was full of filth and manure. I said, "Why did come to me?" The farmer said, "I have tried to get all my neighbors to help me, but no one would help. I went to all the doctors I knew, and they wouldn't help me. I heard you were a new doctor in town, so I thought you might come." I was really mad. Is this what I studied long hours for? Is this going to be my life as a country doctor? Would it come to this? But I knew the farmer didn't know what he was doing, and he was going to lose a good cow and a calf. The farmer was almost crying. I looked over at the farmer and asked, "Have you ever pulled a calf before?"
