Aylen has always dreamed of the faraway places she hears of in stories and songs; compared to them, her little village nestled in a land of ice and snow seems drab and uninteresting. This year, winter has been unusually long and cruel. As one howling blizzard after another blows through the country, food has become scarce and the people are worried. How much longer can they survive? Then the shaman delivers a message: The King of the Winds still grieves the loss of his wife, and winter cannot end until he finds a new bride. Each village must send a suitable maiden on a perilous journey to the castle, where he will choose from among them.
