Charlemagne was crowned Emperor by Pope Leon III in 800 AD. For the next 1000 years, Europe was ruled by families and individuals. All this started to come to an end, in 1806, when Napoleon "mediatised" most of the smaller parts of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1918, came the almost final act with the fall of the Empires of Germany, Austria and Russia. Volume I gives the histories, colour coats-of-arms and family trees of these rulers. Later volumes concern around 600 individuals raised to the rank of prince or duke.
