Back Home During World War II
Pledger a Moon
This is a book about one young boy's experiences back home in the States during World War II. While fathers, brothers, uncles and neighbors fought overseas, their families were left behind. It is a story of rationing, victory gardens, and recycling for the war effort. It is a story of worry and grief but it is also a story of a little boy making the best of the world he had fallen into. Children and adults alike gathered together for solace and for play. The author recalls memories of riding a train for the first time and then a plane, going to the movies, all the while looking over his shoulders for spies and alert in case an air raid erupted. Most of all, the children of the time not only held themselves together, they played an invaluable role in holding their families and, indeed, even their communities together.
