In this second novel set on contemporary Cape Cod, Robertson Browne weaves a tale of intrigue and murder. His protagonist, Dr. David Knight, college professor and practicing psychologist, is drawn into two linked mysteries: that of the behavioral change in his colleague at the college; and the deaths of Alzheimer patients at several local nursing homes. Dr. Knight knows well the behavior and personality of his department chair, Fred Dorfman. He also knows that something is decidedly wrong with Fred as the new college year begins. Determined to find out what has happened and help if possible, Knight finds himself on the trail of those using the college as a fertile ground for their drug dealing. Once again he pits himself against the State Police, who have jurisdiction over infractions of the law on campus, this time in order to protect the integrity and reputation of the department in which he works. Asked to develop a separate psychology program to cater to the academic needs of the school of nursing, Dr. Knight is brought face-to-face with a sinister operation that preys upon the most vulnerable segment of society, Alzheimer?s patients. To his horror, he discovers that the drug dealing on campus and the murder of Alzheimer patients are connected. Knight?s dilemma is to help his coworker from the college, disrupt if not destroy the campus dope ring, and find justice for the Alzheimer victims. Using his position as a psychologist for both a geri-psych service in Cape nursing facilities and a drug treatment facility, he is able to piece together the web of deceit and dishonesty that has led to the death of the defenseless and the addiction of others. Knight has to face not only his own mortality but also his morality as he works outside of acceptable channels to effect a solution. Robertson Browne has called upon his own experiences, background, and knowledge to craft a fast-paced story with verisimilitude and vibe.
