On The Common
E L Barnard
A brief history of an 1811 private boarding academy in a small New England town on the Vermont shore of Lake Champlain. Includes the institution's early history within the context of America's "academy movement", a recap of a 20-year school-centered town feud addressed in 1955-56 by the Vermont State Supreme Court, and a memorable rise of the school's basketball fortunes from regional doormat to state-level prominence in the 1960's. Memories of the author and surviving alumni are included. Appendices include copies of Academy Catalogues, including lists of students, from 1830, 1853, 1860, and 1875. The old academy was a centerpiece on the town common and served the Town of Shoreham for 200 years before it's final demise in 2010.
