Six months ago the Basten cruiser Valkhore was destroyed in Earth's solar system by the Alorei cruiser Wild Mustang. The engagement was precipitated by the discovery of a weapon enhancing mineral on Earth. The Alorei have it and the Bastens want it. The Alorei are a benevolent race whose accidental discovery of the mineral by one of its scout ship pilots has laid the groundwork for the dispute between the two worlds. The Bastens, having suffered the loss of their cruiser to the Mustang's superior weaponry, are intent on acquiring some of the mineral to enhance their weapons and mitigate the Alorei tactical advantage. The Basten military chief, CCS Granospik, having failed in his initial mission by using an inexperienced commander, is told by his superiors to lead the new mission personally. He is to acquire the mineral by entering Earth's solar system with a show of force. The Alorei agree to help the Earthers defend their planet while Ian, E. J., and Jack Clark of Oak Industries develop a hybrid space fighter born of an existing Air Force design. Ian and Astra's relationship moves to a new level while Sunhn and E. J. begin their romantic journey on Alor, the Alorei home world. Astra's father Zar-Clarmoc and his ship, the Flying Dragon, head an attack group that lays in wait for the Bastens arrival. The ensuing battle will decide the fate of Earth and its people.
