Although Amachi is fi ctitious, she faces many dilemmas plaguing our children today (i.e, displacement, broken homes, isolation, and fear). However, through her strength, faith, and a desire to help others, she prevails. Hopefully, this book will remind all of us that harmony can be achieved by working together toward our goals. Unfortunately, in real life, there is no fairy godmother or angel to fi ght for and protect us; we have to do it ourselves. The story takes place in a fi ctitious African town, and the characters have real African names. The names were selected because of their meanings, not the culture of origin. How wonderful it would be if we could come together like the characters in the story, without prejudice and animosity toward one another. When you stop to think about it, we all want the same basic joys of life (i.e, love prosperity, happiness, family, and friendships). Likewise, on some level, we all experience basic pain-heartache, death, disappointment, fi nancial insecurity and despair. This is true, and it does not matter if you are rich or poor, black or white, urban or rural, and your religious affi liation does not exempt you. What we can and should do is teach our children tolerance and love for mankind.
