Even though the "ATHENIA" was the first naval casualty of the Second World War, history made little note of her being sunk by a German torpedo. Most of the stories surrounding that event became over-shadowed by the horrendous unfolding events of the war. The story begins with two young women from vastly different social and economic backgrounds who decide to leave England before the beginning of the Second world War. This decision will result in the death of one of the young women and the beginning of a life of deception by the other. While it was not her plan, the main character of this book did not hesitate to take advantage of the unfortunate death of her traveling companion who died when the the torpedo struck the passenger liner the "ATHENIA". This deliberate decision became the foundation for a life of deception that required her future actions to be one cover-up after another, while trying to achieve a social status that far exceeded her humble background. Without reservation, she uses people in her life of "deception" and is never concerned about how or where they fall. Her mission is all about her self, however, life has a way of creating events and situations that are beyond the control of those that think their plan is infallible. The reader will see the true history of this period and feel the events in the life of Mary Ann Winslow as seen through the eyes of an outside observer. The story flows back and forth between England and the "Gold Coast of Connecticut", with a surprise ending that defines justice!
