AMERICANS ON A KLONG is about a marriage that is smoldering with deceit in Bangkok, Thailand, while the Vietnam War is flaring with live ammunition in Southeast Asia. Roger, a retired US Air Force fighter pilot, returns to his love of flying when Air America, the CIA airline, hires him to take on their motto "Anything, Anywhere, Anytime -- Professionally." A compound of tropical flowers and foliage has a klong (waterway) with a dock, and a two story house, which is home to Roger, Amy and their two sons. Adjacent quarters house three servants. The boys learn to speak Thai fluently and fill the yard with playmates of worldwide nationalities. The Wakeman home is popular as a haven for a steady flow of pilots on Rest and Relaxation, and visiting Friends of Friends. The family's three gibbons perform trapeze artistry, and are the favorite pets among all the unusual animals in the park-like setting. The loveless marriage is tempered by foreign living, humor, and Amy's freedom to explore the world.
