The story opens to a man of quickly fading life and mind. Upon his death the torch passes to Hale Skyne and his other personality Newbie amidst a war between vampires and the Auk Mentar(werewolves) taking place in a deserted town. After filling the reader in on their world and situation, the torch passes again to Rywho Yu as his path to redemption tangles him in a new role as Death's apprentice.
