The business of slavery booms in a local community after a communal war between Akachalla and Umuozigbo, two neighboring communities in Africa. With the prisoners of war captured alive from Umuozigbo, Ikelionwu begins his business of slave trade. The fearless man uses the opportunity to showcase his braveness as the Iroko of Akachalla. As the three white slave masters arrive Akachalla, slavery intensifies beyond control. Agadinwanyi deity and some of Ikelionwu?s kinsmen realize the evil of the inhuman act in the land and begin to advise him to desist from slave trade. Ikelionwu?s megalomaniac instinct will never allow him to heed advice; he neither listens to the gods or any man. Uwadiegwu, his good friend, begins to plot his down fall. The self-acclaimed god of Akachalla was ambushed on his way to Olu by Uwadiegwu and two of his kinsmen. As Ikelionwu?s journey to purchase more slaves fails, the rumor of his death circulates all over the five villages. The three white slave masters flee Akachalla as news of Ikelionwu?s death intensifies. At the twilight of his heroic life, Ikelionwu was made to fall. He can never imagine the misfortune that befell him. He resorts to drinking a poisonous concoction and dies on top of his bamboo bed.
