In the spring of 1998, the National Park Service completed a comprehensive Archeological Overview and Assessment (AOA) for Liberty Island. An AOA was conducted for the island to provide additional information to site managers concerning the remaining archeological resources. The purpose of the AOA for Liberty Island was to: 1) complement and elaborate an earlier archeological and historical research; 2) identify potentially sensitive archeological sites that could be adversely affected by later construction/maintenance activities; 3) synthesize archeological and documentary data about the site; and 4) identify areas for additional research.
