Dialogues with the Mirror
Jean-marc Iyeli Akerele
It took me a while to build but after seventy seven days of working day and night, often to the point of collapse, I finally built my psychomanteum, my twenty cubed feet room of beautifully polished and highly reflective glass, a mirror which looks endlessly into itself. And now here I was standing in the finished product wondering just what had possessed me to build it in the first place, but as I stripped off my clothes and lit the solitary lamp, the presence I began to feel in that infinite mirror quickly reminded me of the reasons why I had built this powerful tool and just what I wished to accomplish by my actions. In beginning my meditations in this room I opened not only a doorway to those places which border our world but also a dialogue with that which lies within these mirrors. This book is a record of my conversations with what I saw there and a record of the madness which for a time overtook me, because in the end when you open a dialogue with a mirror you are still just talking to yourself.
