La Maison de Lumiere tells the story of the Lumiere family moving to the small, narrow minded town of Apple Heights Pennsylvania to open a New Age shop. Because the Lumieres are a bi-racial couple with twin, teenage children (a damaged, homosexual son, and a precocious, meditative daughter), they encounter considerable resistance from the bigoted atmosphere of the town. This comes most notably from James Christian Senior, a racist history teacher at the local high school where Morgan (matriarch of the Lumiere clan) has just gotten a job as the new science teacher. Little known to James Senior, his prized teenage son, James Junior, has been a closet Buddhist for most of his young life, and has been plotting an escape to a monastery under the pretense of going to college. As James Junior becomes intrigued by the Lumiere children ? first spiritually, then romantically ? events unfold that threaten to undo both families.
