The Other Window chronicles the life of Fariba Ansari. Born and raised in Tehran, Iran. She is given in marriage to Wolfgang Schneider, a German diplomat. He is ordered back to Nazi Germany in 1939, with Fariba and their children Anna, 10, and Ramin, 8. The family settles in the Schneider house in Bamberg but Herr Schneider is required to continue to Berlin. He is never heard from again. How they survive the vindictive Nazis, then welcome liberation by the American Army, is a demonstration of courage and tenacity. Anna, now seventeen, falls in love with Hank McGinnis, an American sergeant. They marry and, with Fariba, move to Seattle. This upsets Ramin which triggers a search by both the American and German authorities. Fariba helps her daughter survive Hank?s death in Korea assisting Anna raise her two children, Roy and Dorri. The children go on to their own careers, overcoming disasters of political instability. Fariba?s philosophy: ?When things appear bleak, look for the other window.? Will Fariba?s unshakable will to survive keep the family afloat through the political and social upheavals they encounter?
