Leeds, England, the mid-eighties, and young musician Billy Hyder has a problem. Locked into a downward spiral of alcohol and prescription medication, he's out of work, out of love, and out of control. Increasingly estranged from the world about him, Billy nevertheless fights to preserve his place in it, settling down with new girlfriend Kerry and embarking on an arduous rehabilitation program in the hope that things can only get better. To his surprise, however, and ultimate disillusionment, he comes to realise that his real problems lie less within himself than within the social matrix he inhabits.
