Rose, a quiet and unassertive young violinist at the New England Conservatory is in love with the esteemed Maestro Johansson. However, when their love affair is exposed, Rose abandons the rehearsal room and tries to adapt to her suburban hometown but instead faces a vicious cycle of self-destruction and loneliness.
