Sylvester Rosecrans, a native of Homer in Licking County, Ohio, was the only Bishop of Columbus to have been born within its boundaries. Having been led into the Catholic Church by his brother, the famous Civil War General, he became devoted to the truth he found there. He was ordained in Rome, was a pastor, lecturer, college professor and president, seminary theologian, newspaper editor in Cincinnati and Columbus, and the first auxiliary bishop ever appointed in the United States. This is the first full-length biography ever written of this busy and popular bishop, who died at the age of fifty-one on the day after the consecration of his cathedral.
