Sheila Makinski's world is shaken the day her sister Abbey is born. She'd gloried in the love and attention of her parents and grandmother and now feels threatened by Abbey's presence. Abbey, a sickly, timid child learns early to stay out of the way of the strong-willed, quick tempered, demanding Sheila. Their mother Jayne tries to teach them patience, discipline and the importance of living and loving as children of God. Abbey welcomes Him into her life and grows into a relationship that relies on Him for guidance. Sheila, on the other hand, has no use for God or anyone who is weak enough to admit that they pray to Him. She has plans and goals for her life and doesn't want anyone interfering with them; not her sister and certainly not God. John Makinski, who blames God for the loss of his childhood dreams to the Great Depression and World War II, is obsessed with becoming a well-known and well-respected lawyer. His whole life focuses on one desire--to raise a son who will fulfill his dreams. Jayne Makinski's days are spent trying to appease John, keep a spotless house and keep peace between Sheila and Abbey. In spite of her best efforts and prayers, the family spirals into a dangerous state of dysfunction.
