Douglas Jeffery Moreau is a young patent office worker living in downtown Portland, Oregon. With inventors walking into his office every day with new and exciting ways to change the world, Doug feels as though he hasn?t done enough to better other people?s lives. Compounding his feelings of a lack of accomplishment, Doug worries that he doesn?t have the relevant skills to help others out. After a strange day involving a radical new invention brought into Doug?s office and the discovery of a mysterious, recently fired bullet casing lying in the street, Doug throws himself into bed, expecting a long night of sleep. Instead, he awakens to his apartment building shaking violently and the sound of metal shearing across metal. When the chaos ends, Doug finds the room completely dark, except for a small amount of light coming, not from the pair of windows in his bedroom, but from behind a poster hanging on his wall. Removing the poster, Doug finds a large square window that dissolves away once opened. On the other side is not Portland, but an abandoned, darkened city Doug has never seen before. Once he realizes that he cannot get back into Portland, Doug prepares to explore this new place, bringing with him a backpack full of gear. As he travels through the city, dawn breaks, revealing that Doug could not possibly still be on earth, as there are two suns: a large red one, accompanied by a smaller blue. Follow Doug as he forms alliances with the inhabitants of Parellity and learns how valuable his previously unimportant skills actually are.
