Publisher Marketing: England 1989. The age of Thatcherism where the recent flourishing enterprise society is transmuting into a recession. We meet Micky Carberry, a redundant miner, on the eve of his thirtieth birthday. Micky's wife, Alison, has recently left him for a financial consultant, taking their young daughter with her. When he is not signing on at the job centre Micky spends his days drifting around town. With his brand of cynical humour he annoys various shop assistants, market researchers and 'The Ancient Philosophers, ' those old men who regularly gather in the public library to put the world to rights. On the day of his thirtieth birthday Micky runs into Rick Rawson, an old school friend. Rick, straddles the fine line between being a successful entrepreneur and a blatant confidence trickster. He and Micky, together with a singular down and out they meet known as The Prince of the Streets, embark on a series of money making scams, crearing their own version of the 'enterprise society.' Micky also meets and falls for a young woman called Debby, who works in a local cafe. Debby's boyfriend leaves her and she and her son move in with Micky. After a few days, however, complications arise as Micky's wife returns. It is at this point that Rick has an idea for the grand scam during which Micky discovers who his true friends really are. An entertaining novel full of memorable characters, comedy and pathos set in a era where some people flew whilst others failed.
