This is a story of survival from riches to rags, of how cultural and class differences are put aside in the face of adversity. It started with a man and woman meeting. She is Jewish; he a silk weaver. When they marry, her family cast her out and turns their back on her. When James, her husband, gets killed, she cannot cope alone with two children to look after. She leaves them at the workhouse, believing they would be cared for, then drowns herself.
