?Vivian? is an attempt to understand what it means to be American Aristocracy. Who decides the hierarchical order? Who is born into a life where one can influence culture? The character of Vivian Garrison, like Hedda Gabler before her, has led a life of daring and decadence, and has returned to her hometown for a life of bourgeois comfort. However, her shadow dream-world and her fantastic past invades to shatter her newfound reality. This play examines how identity is formed by birthright and filial duty, and how the true self is in conflict with the notions and strictures that society, especially family, enforce upon that individual. The character of Vivian pushes beyond all morals and social restrictions and finds a sense of self through transgression. More info on the author at www.joshuaruebl.com
