Mattie Sands goes to the beach almost every day, because her five-year-old daughter, Sara, loves the warm Gulf waters and white sand of Santa Rosa Island. And, it's a safe place for the little girl to play...isn't it?

An environmental group sabotages an oil platform, and the resulting explosion creates a spill. A scientist has genetically engineered an oil-eating bacteria, giving it a rapid rate of growth, and the CEO of the oil company releases the bacteria into the Gulf of Mexico in hopes it will clean up the spill before the public knows about it. But a well-intended action can have unintended consequences, and the bacteria creates a disaster no one could have foreseen.

Cotton Chastain, who has the Second Sight, hears about the explosion in the Gulf and heads for Louisiana to make sure his brother, who works on the platform, is safe. But he comes to an exit on the interstate that leads to the Florida beaches. And a premonition of danger makes him forget his original plans and leads him to the beach.
