This novel rebuts the Southern Baptist Convention tenet that "A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband."
Not only must wives accept this hierarchy, they must do so nicely!
Some plot details:
When Sarah runs away from her husband Joseph, her world explodes into one of liberation and fear.
She has no friends, no family, and almost no money, but her spunk, ingenuity, and deep need for freedom might be enough.
Though she takes on a new name and travels far away, she often reminds herself that she is safe from Joseph, that he will not find her and exact his own special punishment.
