The Black River captures the Nigerian society through the eyes of the protagonist Endwell (Angell) as he recounts the experience of growing up in oil rich but very poor community. There is humour, courage and love. Angell is caught up in the line of fire while championing a cause against big oil giants whose activities contribute to environmental damage in his village of Kirama. With bad injuries and doctors on national strike, his only chance of survival was to be flown abroad for treatment. While in London he makes good recovery and experiences a different life. He draws comparisons between life in his oil-rich but poor village and the new encounters in a developed country. He reflects on his next steps. Should he go back home and continue the fight against his government and big oil giants or seek asylum and enjoy a good life away from the chaos of Kirama?
