Synergized Middle School Chemistry: Matter's Phases and Properties, Volume 1, (Blue Cover) is the teacher's edition companion to the Synergized Middle School Chemistry Student Edition (Yellow Cover).  SMSC Volume 1 contains information about the SMSC curriculum and pedagogy as well provides extensive "Teacher Notes" for each lesson. SMSC Volume 1 gives practical advice to teachers ranging from chemistry content refreshers to material preparation to literacy and assessment strategies. To help save time and money, SMSC investigations use safe and economical supplies found in supermarkets and discount stores. Post-assessments are provided for each lesson set.    The three, sequential lesson sets in SMSC Volume 1 focus on the concepts associated with understanding the phases of matter, kinetic molecular theory, density, and the attractive forces that hold atoms and molecules together to form solids, liquids, and create surface tensions. SMSC Matter's Phases and Properties provides the foundation for further chemistry study. SMSC's Elements and Interactions, Volume 2 (Red Cover) is the next part of the curriculum and can be taught at the same or a later grade once students understand the basics in Volume 1.    SMSC is a unique approach for teaching middle level science. SMSC "synergizes" or "puts together" lesson sequences using the best practices of science instruction: inquiry-based learning, literacy integration (nonfiction reading and writing, using science notebooks, science mathematics connections) and embedded assessments (effective design, real world applications). SMSC students are active participants in the learning process. Lessons are engaging, hands-on, and relevant. Students read, write, calculate, and communicate in the context of science. Student assessment is continuous and ongoing.
