The Broken Promise Naom Nyarigoti
The Broken Promise
Naom Nyarigoti
Students leaving Africa for studies in western countries leave behind loads of hopes and expectations from their respective families and communities. This novel satirizes the cultural, social, economic, and emotional experiences they go through as they strive to match the expectations and identity. It exposes the insights of their life abroad, as it appears; it may not be the same as people are made to believe. When Mweri realises that what he has strived to achieve in his four year stint in the UK is only a mirage, he decides to go back to his family. He is however quite uncertain whether life will ever be the same again.
