In the winter of 1973 the U. S. faced several crises. The OPEC oil embargo caused gasoline shortages and record oil prices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost almost 49% and a deep recession stagnated the national economy, inflation approached 12%. The war in Vietnam expanded to Cambodia. The Watergate scandal polluted the Office of the President. Richard Nixon was accused of obstructing justice. Articles of impeachment were being drafted by the Senate. The People's Environmental Protection League shut down 40% of U. S. rail traffic. A splinter group of economists incited the largest tax revolt in recent history. A new economic force grew out of the secession of a small town in the Texas Hill Country. Finally, in July 1974 a demonstration in Despot City attended by 300,000 staged history's greatest bloodless coup.
