The Chronicles of Vernham Vale Volume 1 1805. Sir Henry Gifford arrives with his family from their home in India to inherit Gifford Hall a dilapidated estate in Vernham Vale, England. It is not long before the family realise they have inherited far more than the run down Hall. Sir George and Winifred Gifford, Sir Henry's ancestors, have been resident ghosts at Gifford Hall since the late seventeenth century when George gambled away the entire family fortune, leaving the upcoming generations to struggle to maintain the enormous house. Embezzled ledgers, a malicious wraith who haunts the ghosts, and the dogged pursuit of the lovely daughter of the house by an unlovely suitor, all have to be dealt with before George and Winifred can finally move on.
