Kristen faces life alone. She survives the death of her mother, to then be watched over by a man who wants her only to satisfy his desires. She lives in a secret room built by her abusive caretaker. Then the Maddison family moves in, and her life changes again. She sneaks out from her secret place when everyone is away to eat and take whatever she wants. Katie starts having problems of her own and learns she may have a chance to regain her sight. Her blindness has left her bitter and uncertain about her future. Will a life threatening surgery enable her to see again?The two girls become secret friends in a world where children are often forgotton. Their secret is exposed when an accidential fire destroys part of their home.
