She bestowed a radiant smile upon him, whereupon he straightened himself jauntily. "I have great pleasure," he said. "Poor Mr. O'Rourke!" murmured Katharine. Her eyes filled with tears. "They have killed one of my men, sir," I said. "Look!" I dismounted and bent over my poor second officer, who lay huddled on the stone step. Jackson and the two other men were working over him anxiously. "I don't think he's gone, sir," said Jackson. O'Rourke moved a little as he spoke. I turned hastily to the police captain. "Do you know of a doctor near?" I asked. The officer leaned on his saber and regarded the injured man indifferently. He clearly had small interest in a wounded American sailor. "A doctor!" I repeated. "I know of none," answered the policeman coolly. Miss Randolph's eyes flashed. "I'll go get Dr. Long!" she exclaimed.
