Roland King is an ex-professional football player who took charge of Penderwood Town's Sunday League Amateur's. His knowledge of the game inspired and guided them to become League Champions, in the same year Nottm Forest won the F. A. Cup in 1959. But in his private life, Roland's first tempestuous marriage to a beautiful and successful model ended bitterly. And determined to choose a second wife more carefully he found Elizabeth, a woman with a shy reserved nature. But inside her own home, she stood her ground in the arguments over the future of their only child, a son George. Disliking losing control of the lives of his family, Roland's temper got the better of him. Yet his generosity was without question a redeeming trait of his character. Loving him Elizabeth accepted the man he was; and persuaded to go on an outing, arranged for the women deserted in the football season by their men folk, Elizabeth made some new friends, calling themselves, "Football Widows". After an initial disappointment, the Girls Night Out was a success, and late home, Elizabeth discovered a side to Roland she never suspected.
