A family of ragged, but gifted, children, moves into a small rural town and disrupts the quiet routine of its school. It is time for the talent show, the biggest school event of the year. Floyd Ray wants to throw knives at a bullseye, and Jenny Sue says she will play a fiddle piece.

The star pupil Abigail plays classical piano pieces that usually win, and this year's large money award encourages her to pracice especially hard. When the talent show night arrives, tiny Jenny Sue is wearing one of jolly Roxanne's "taken up" dresses, and Flyod Ray has been persuadid to throw tennis balls instead of knives.

Little Jenny Sue's ring violin notes caputure the hearts of the judges. Abigail learns to be gracious loser and gains a new friend.
